Visit Museo Atlántico: Europe’s only underwater museum

Museo Atlántico in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, is Europe’s first underwater museum. Located at 12 to 14 meters deep, this unique installation combines art and marine conservation. Visitors experience an extraordinary underwater world where creativity and ecology coexist.

Why is Museo Atlántico so unique?

Created by artist Jason deCaires Taylor, Museo Atlántico is not just an attraction – it’s an ecological project. The sculptures are made from pH-neutral materials that foster coral growth and marine biodiversity. As a result, it’s both a living reef and a powerful artistic statement.

An artwork beneath the sea

Over 300 life-sized figures form a series of haunting installations:

  • ‘The Rubicon’: 35 human figures walking toward a wall.
  • ‘The Raft of Lampedusa’: referencing the refugee crisis.
  • ‘Los Jolateros’: children in traditional tin boats.
  • Hybrid human-nature figures.
  • ‘The Portal’: a mirror reflecting the ocean surface.
  • ‘Deregulated’: businessmen on seesaws and swings.
  • ‘The Human Gyroscope’: a circle of 200 figures depicting life cycles.

I have a diving certificate

This option is for divers who have a diving license and who dive regularly

I don’t have a diving license

This option is for beginners who want to visit the underwater museum

I haven´t dived in a long time

This option is for certified divers who wish to make a freshening dive first

How deep is Museo Atlántico?

The sculptures rest 12 to 14 meters underwater – deep enough for an immersive dive, yet shallow enough for excellent visibility. These conditions make it accessible and safe for both certified divers and beginners.

What can you expect during your dive?

You’ll dive in calm, clear waters with exceptional visibility. The statues gradually become living reefs, attracting marine life such as barracudas, octopuses, stingrays, and sardines. The entire installation evolves over time as nature integrates with art.

Who can visit Museo Atlántico?

This underwater museum is open to everyone – whether you’re a certified diver or trying diving for the first time.

Certified divers

If you have a diving license, you can join a guided boat dive. The dive is relaxed and focused on exploring the installations at your own pace, with plenty of opportunities for photography.

No diving experience?

Beginners can join a specially designed program that includes:

  • A practice session in the swimming pool.
  • A beach dive to get familiar with equipment.
  • A guided boat dive to the museum, to a maximum depth of 12 meters.

This experience takes around five hours and is supervised by instructors who ensure safety and comfort throughout the dive.

How much does it cost to visit Museo Atlántico?

The cost depends on your experience and the type of program. Certified divers pay from €48. For visitors with no diving experience, the complete introductory program costs €149. This includes a theory session, a shallow sea dive, pool training, and a guided dive to the Museo Atlántico.

Where is Museo Atlántico located?

The museum lies about 300 meters offshore from the Papagayo beaches in Playa Blanca. The dive site is accessed by boat and located in a sheltered bay, offering calm conditions and excellent visibility for divers of all levels.

Ecological impact

Beyond its artistic message, Museo Atlántico plays an essential role in marine regeneration. The sculptures serve as artificial reefs that attract fish, promote coral growth, and increase biodiversity in the area.

Why you should visit Museo Atlántico

It’s a rare opportunity to explore underwater art in a safe, enriching environment. Whether you’re an experienced diver or a complete beginner, Museo Atlántico is an unforgettable experience that merges creativity, adventure, and conservation.

Professional, helpful and enjoyable dives. I conducted 3 x dives with the Dive College Playa Blanca (Bob), very professional organisation, very helpful, and the dives were superb. I’d highly recommend this dive centre to anyone wishing to start diving or competent divers. Thanks Andy

Amazing experience and safe If you are nervous please this review may help..This was my first time diving.i was 50 at the Weekend and this was something I always wanted to do.Firstly as I wasn't sure how I would feel with all the equipment on I tried the free dive in the tank. The young man with blond hair talked me through everything and made me feel relaxed so much so I booked the try dive.I was so nervous this morning but wanted to do this as a way to remember turning 50.Bart & Damo was our dive instructors and was absolutely fantastic. I felt so so safe from shaking on the shore to being confident on the sea bed. Bart and Damo was excellent when under the water everything is taken gradual and it is very clear with hand signals as to what you need to do I only have one functioning eye so was also worried about visability down there but it was light and clear and you see some amazing fish and coral.I 1000% recommend this company to take you out diving. I hope if you feel nervous reading this will help you to know you are in safe hands for an incredible experience.A big tick off my bucket list.Thankyou everyone for a special moment and your patience from pool to sea.

Welcoming, friendly and amazing experience. Had an intro to diving course with 2 dives and then decided to do the open water qualification. I have to say it ‘s the most friendly and welcoming place if you are daunted or a beginner. Fantastic people to help from Steve, bob, Jess and my instructor for the week - Hank. Had a blast. For someone who hasn’t taken care of his fitness for a good few years and found some tasks daunting - it has been a life afirming process. Without their care I wouldn’t have found the wonderful world below the waves. thank you and couldn’t recommend them enough.

Amazing first time experience with my son! Fantastic experience, loved every minute, especially my 14yo son. Bart’s team were great, safety is clearly the no1 priority and we felt perfectly safe with our 6m dive, pool session and then a 12m dive to the Museum. We were lucky enough to see an Angel shark & a barracuda at the museum. All the staff here were helpful, knowledgable & never took their eye of us to ensure we were safe at all times. My son started off very nervous but that didn’t last long as the instruction & explanation was superb, & by the end of it he was wanting to go back and complete his full PADI open water course!!Great team, great dives, well done & thankyou all!!!

Excellent Try Dive Experience Bart and the team really made us feel welcome, explained the basics of the try dive, kitted us out and took us for a 30 min scuba dive along the coast. Lots of fish to see in the crystal clear water and dived down to 6 meters. If you’ve never scuba dived before but want to give it a try, then this trip is ideal 👍
